5Hairstopper - Where'd they get the name?Dec 23, 2008
By Michael S. Moreland "mikem"
I manage an apartment building in NYC and my men spend too much time snaking out drain lines where the residents clog up the drains in the bathtubs with hair and kid's toys and shampoo caps, etc. I've tried some of the other brands of hair stoppers but they prevented hair and debris from going down the drain by...preventing ANYTHING (including water)from going down the drain. This piece is well designed and does the simple job it is asked to do. What can you get for $5 that actually does what it's supposed to do? In NYC a plumber gets about $220 for a house call.

3It works ... sort of.Jul 24, 2009
By Tony Polito "TonyPolito"
Bought this gizmo at BBB.

Ok, when you press down hard on the center part into the drain, the outer lip DOES make a good seal against the tub. And the center part gets somewhat of a seal against the inside of the drain. Must be made of a particular kind of plastic conducive to that. That's good news.

Some of the hair gets caught up by the outer ring, which has a bunch of little "thorns" sticking up to catch it.

But the long slits around the sides of the inside of the center part are poor design. When hair piles up in the center of the bottom of the gizmo - - blocking the holes there - - water (and hair) will then try to flow out through the slits.

The section with the slits is only partially sealed against the side of the drain. Not enough to stop all flow of water & hair, but too much of a seal to let water flow freely, so the shower starts backing up in water. And yet the hair is getting through the slits.

When I took the gizmo out there was a ring of hair around the outside where the slits are. Proof that hair was flowing through the slits and that some hair is going on down into the drain.

It's a pain to clean. You have to pick out what hair is wrapped around the 'thorns' and you have to clean out the center part ... and then clean off the hair from around the outside of the slits. I had to clean it completely after every two uses ... or water started backing up immediately.

It's obviously doing somewhat of a good job, but I am still going to have a clog problem eventually since hair is getting through. And in the meantime, I have to constantly spend time cleaning up the gizmo.

Right now I am awaiting the arrival from Amazon of Danco 88821 2-3/4-Inch Tub Mesh Strainer, Stainless which I hope will be more effective and easier to clean.

[UPDATE: July 29, 2009] I got this thing to get a good seal against the sides of the drain, so that the water (with the hair) can't flow out the long slits. Not surprisingly, water backs up in the tub once the few, small holes at bottom are covered with hair & soap scum. So far, the stainless steel version mentioned above appears to be working much better.

5Great for long, coarse, thick hair!Feb 03, 2010
By A. Mason "Lover of Life"
I am a Black woman with long, coarse, and very, very thick hair. I "co wash" (washing hair with conditioner) and detangle my hair almost daily when wearing it in a curly, wash and go style. I experience hair loss with daily the washing and it has become much more of a problem with the plumbing at my new apartment.
I do see the rare few strands that get through the product, but it is overall amazing at catching pretty much all of it, especially taking into consideration how much hair I can comb out sometimes. For example; I experienced some major breakage after wearing braids -first time in 10 years- for just 2 weeks and this product caught at least 98% of what hair came out- which was a LOT.
The product is easy to set in place when needed and easy to remove to dispose of the hair when done. Wishing I had this years and years ago. Highly recommended.

3Prevents most, but not all, hair from going down the drainJan 16, 2009
By Lauren
This item catches most of my long (thick) hair before it goes down the drain. After each shower I remove it from the drain and wipe out the hair collected with a tissue. Inevitably after a few weeks, I get a clog in my tub drain from the few stray hairs that manage to sneak under the lip of the catcher and down the drain. Then I am taking apart the drain to remove the clog. It's nice to not have to unclog as often as before, but hair manages to still get down somehow; I think because it is so light, it just sits right on top of the drain and there is no sort of seal around the part where it fits over the drain and onto the tub. I need something that some sort of seal or suction around the bottom so that hair cannot get under it. I imagine a stainless steel trap would do the same thing, unfortunately, unless it was very heavy.

3Catches hair, blocks drainAug 24, 2011
By John E. Broughton
The good news is that this works, catching hair. The bad news is that - at least for the drain in my bathtub, 1 5/8 inch diameter - it fit so snugly that water doesn't flow well through it once there is some hair in it. I recommend the Microban Hair Catcher instead (available on Amazon, but alas not eligible for Amazon Prime; also at Home Depot, where I couldn't find it two weeks ago and so was trying alternatives).
