Humans 2, Rabbits 1Jan 19, 2009
By Jim Rac Trap works great for catching rabbits.
First night we put it out, we caught a large rabbit. Second night we saw a small rabbit walk inside the trap, eat all the bait, and walk right out again!
Turns out that the trap was not sensitive enough to catch the smaller bunnies. But thanks to a review here, we found out that the trap's sensitivity is easily adjustable - the instructions are a bit opaque in this area. If you want to make the trap more sensitive to smaller animals, see the section of the instructions entitled "Correcting Over-Adjustment to the Trigger Rods". The steps are very easy & quick.
Would have given the trap 5 stars, but deducted 1 star for the poorly titled instructions. I don't design rabbit traps, what in the world is a trigger rod. "Correcting Over-Adjustment to the Trigger Rods" accurately describes WHAT you are doing, but a new inexperienced, maybe slightly dumb user like me with a problem to solve is looking for a section with a title that tells me that it contains the steps that will solve my problem.
Sorry for the rant.
After adjusting the trap, we caught the smaller bunny the next night. Highly recommend this trap.

Good choice for squirrelsAug 02, 2008
By Headphone Pilot I had a female squirrel chew through a gable vent and make a nest for herself (and babies) in our attic. This trap is a good choice for squirrels -- rat "snap" traps are too small. The model 1040 trap is a slightly better choice -- it has the same width and height, but is a little longer, making it less likely that the squirrel's "butt" will hold the door open.
Keep the instruction sheet packed with the trap. It describes how to adjust the sensitivity of the pan. Trip it a few times yourself to make sure you are fully familiar with it. If squirrels still manage to steal the bait, try smearing peanut butter on the underside of the pan -- it's harder for the squirrels to steal it that way.
Now, the part you DON'T want to know. You are not doing the squirrel any favors by relocating it. Many states (mine included) specifically ban relocating squirrels and other wild animals. At best you are giving your problem animal to some other homeowner. At worst, squirrels and other small mammals are territorial and will die if transported to unfamiliar territories where the current residents are unlikely to welcome them anyway. Also, all wild animals harbor diseases and parasites (fleas, ticks, bot flies, etc.) -- transport the animal and you spread local infections.
The animal really does have to be humanely destroyed.

Know the trigger wellFeb 07, 2009
By Bird Feeder The Havahart 1030 is a good trap for squirrels. Do not get one any smaller. The tail and butt will keep the doors from shutting if you do. At first I was frustrated that the bushy tail rats where eating and leaving because the arms where hard to set perfectly with the bait pan. If you set it to hard, the critters come and go. To light and it will trip with the wind. I tried rubber bands and twistys from bread loaves to hold peanuts to the pan(peanut butter gets to sloppy after a while)That didn't work. I found out by accident that the best way to bait this thing was to put the nuts (a few peanuts, cashews,or any nut will do) under the bait pan. Squirrels will keep nuzzling and rooting to get to them which flips the bait pan up instead of pressure down. This makes it much less sensitive to setting the arms perfectly with the bait pan. You still have to play with the arm settings to find a good spot. Once you get that down its a sure trap that holds up really well. Practice will get them every time. I have reduced the heard to almost zero.

Worked perfectlyAug 15, 2007
By Jeff L. Adcock I have used it twice to get a squirrel and rabbit, the meat was a little gamey but......just kidding. I was able to release the pests far from my home.

Much better for squirrels than rabbitsJun 08, 2010
By M. J. Landers I bought this Havahart trap (model 1030) from Amazon over a year ago for the purpose of catching rabbits in my yard. However, all I've ever caught was squirrels, which I really can't complain about as they are also a problem. Though I haven't been able to observe it, I suspect this trap may be a little too small for many rabbits which makes them hesitant to enter or the door is not able to shut all the way allowing them to back out. This year, there are substantially less squirrels in my yard than last year because of using the trap.
I've since purchased a model 1079 Havahart trap (much larger than this one) and caught a rabbit on the first day using that one. I baited the trap with a fresh carrot with the leaves attached and 3 slices of apple (1 slice near the front of the trap, 1 on the trip mechanism, and 1 in the back of the trap). The rabbit ate all 3 slices of apple but did not even touch the carrot. Anyway, if your intent is to catch rabbits, I recommend Havahart model 1079 over this trap (model 1030), and make sure to use apple slices as bait.
