5The Trap with a HeartAug 12, 2005
By Alejandra Vernon "artist & illustrator"
Anyone who deals with feral animals on a regular basis will do well to have their own Havahart trap, rather than getting one for a limited time from the Humane Society; that way when the opportunity for capturing the animal presents itself, one is ready for the moment. Also, trapping some wary or streetwise animals can take patience, gradually placing the food further in the trap. A few critters take time to get used to the mesh under their paws, and feel secure enough to venture into the trap, and occasionally it's longer than the fortnight the Humane Society allots for the rental.

For me, it's the feral cats that accumulate in my apartment complex garage, scrounging for food and seeking shelter. Depending on the estimated health and age of the animal, one can either trap and then neuter/spay and release, or take them to the local animal control. The purpose is to stop the cycle of misery caused by the endless multiplication of unwanted cats, some born to mothers so hungry they don't have the milk to feed them.

The Havahart Professional Cage Trap is ingenious in design, and sturdy in construction. If you keep your trap clean and dry, it will last for decades. I have used my 32" Model 1079 for everything from small kittens to a large tom that must have tipped the scales at 15 + lbs. A word of caution: Always cover the top of the cage with a towel after catching an animal, because a trapped animal will often try to reach up and scratch your hand on the handle, and also, the less the animal sees, the less fearful it will be.

3old standby could use a few improvementsSep 01, 2008
By Stuart A. England
Fortunately I've used this type of trap before and know how the trigger is supposed to work. The unit I received required some "custom bending" of the trigger arm before I could set it at all, and a little more tweaking to get the trigger set to a sensitive level.
Since practically any critter you're likely to trap is going to poop in the cage (out of fear or impatience)it would make sense to make a solid bottom to the trap that wont transfer poop to whatever vehicle you use to transfer the animal. You will have to rinse it out anyway, so why not design it to save the extra step of using something under it?
Otherwise a strong, reliable and long-lasting trap with a well balanced handle.

5Live AnimalTrapSep 30, 2007

We have a real problem with feral cats in this area. I'm concerned that they will spread disease to our cats, and they get into our cat's food and the trash. The Havahart Live Animal Trap catches them safetly so they at least have a chance at getting adopted by someone who will love and care for them. I purchased my trap from ANTOnline; they had the item in stock at promised, they delivered quickly, and the trap itself is strong and roomy. Well worth the money spent.

3Livetrap for raccoons?Aug 16, 2009
By Janice C. Rock
This is a great trap, but rather small for raccoons. I bought two sizes, and the larger size has caught several raccoons, but I haven't caught one in this trap. We set them both at the same time. Still, the havahart trap is a quality, well-built trap.

4Success - time and againJun 19, 2009
By H. Rivers
I've used this trap to catch groundhogs (woodchucks) and done so successfully on a number of occasions.

The trap is easy to set up. We covered it with a little hay both inside and on top to make it seem more natural. We use fresh ice burg lettuce as bait, which they absolutely love and we put the trap near their hole. It took about 3 days to catch the first one, then 2 days for the second and third.

Releasing can be tricky - the trap is easy enough to open, but you want to make sure you're safe and that the animal won't be tempted to come after you. I usually release from inside the van, opening the side door and putting the cage on the ground.

Be sure to clean the cage after every use, and keep it clean and dry in between uses.
